“ Glen E. Holt is former Director and Policy Consultant to the St. Louis Public Library in St. Louis , Missouri . He holds a bachelor's degree from Baker University and master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago . He taught at Washington University in St. Louis for 13 years, sharing in the organization of the Urban Studies BA major and the Urban Affairs MA degree. Dr. Holt chaired these programs for five years. In addition, he directed the honors program at the College of Liberal Arts , Twin Cities Campus, for half a decade, then became Executive Director of the St. Louis Public Library (SLPL), a position he held for 17 years. In his years as Director of SLPL, he tripled its budget, vastly increased its children's and outreach services, more than doubled circulation and visitation, and oversaw a program that renovated or built new libraries at 11 of its 15 locations. Dr. Holt's writing has appeared in several history journals as well as in Library Trends, Public Libraries, Library Journal, and the library financial magazine The Bottom Line, where he writes a quarterly column on the economics of librarianship. Dr. Holt's administrative expertise has won him a variety of awards, including recognition for his innovation and risk-taking while at SLPL with bestowal of the 2002 Charlie Robinson Award by the Public Library Association. He has also served as a policy making and planning consultant to historical societies, foundations, libraries, museums, and private-sector companies.”

Bob Usherwood is widely experienced in the practice and teaching of librarianship and information studies. Before joining the Department at Sheffield he was Chief Librarian in the London Borough of Lambeth. He started his career with Devon County Libraries and has also worked for the London Boroughs of Havering and Sutton, and the Polytechnic of North London. Over the years he has presented papers to many conferences and courses in Great Britain and abroad. His international work has taken him to various parts of the world, including Australia , Hong Kong , Singapore , India , Kenya , Ethiopia , Poland , Canada , Russia , Scandinavia , Swaziland , and Hungary . In 1978 he received the Senior Librarians Award which enabled him to investigate library public relations in the United States . he was one of two British librarians invited to America to attend the White House Conference on Library and Information Services . He was controversial editor of The Assistant Librarian , and is the author of numerous publications, inlcuding four books: The Visible Library (1981), The Public Library as Public Knowledge (1989), Public Library Politics (1993) and Rediscovering Public Library Management (1996). He has served on LISC's predecessor, LACE (the Library Advisory Council for England ); the Library Association Council and many professional working parties and committees. He was Chairperson of the LA's Working Party on Ethics which led it to adopt a Code of Professional Conduct in 1983. He was presented with an Honorary Fellowship of the LA in 1992 and made a Fellow of the Institute of Information Scientists in 1993. He was elected President of the Library Association in 1998.
